The production of animal-derived foods often requires more resources and generates more greenhouse gas emissions than the production of plant-based foods. For example, the production of beef requires significantly more land, water, and energy than the production of plant-based protein sources such as beans or lentils. In addition, animal agriculture is a major contributor to deforestation, as forests are often cleared to create land for grazing or growing feed crops.
