The Switch | Student Film Directed and Written by Tommy J Housman | University of Evansville Student Media

On the night of a 21st birthday, a family gathers for dinner in a home where tension quietly lives beneath the surface. As the evening unfolds, small moments begin to reveal the pressures each person is carrying, turning a familiar celebration into something far more fragile.

The Switch is a character-driven short film that explores family, responsibility, and the unseen weight of everyday life. Set in a single location and unfolding in real time, the film focuses on performance, atmosphere, and emotional authenticity to capture a moment that feels both intimate and universal.

Written and directed by Tommy J Housman, the film was created as part of a 16-week student collaboration with his Video Production class and Jon Robertson’s Sound Reinforcement and Recording Class at the University of Evansville. Shot in one room over the course of a single day, produced in one semester The Switch uses a minimalist approach and guided improvisation to build a natural, lived-in dynamic between its characters.

OFFICIAL TRAILER

The Switch is a student-produced short film directed by Tommy J Housman through University of Evansville Student Media. Created through collaborative filmmaking and experiential learning at UE.

A father’s quiet sacrifice unfolds during a birthday celebration, revealing the unseen cost of love when survival and dignity collide. Screening May 1st in the Lutz Lab at the University of Evansville and then released for limited streaming.

The title sequence for The Switch, created by Tommy J Housman for the official soundtrack track “The Switch (Title Sequence),” establishes the film’s tone through a restrained minimalist visual language. Produced through University of Evansville Student Media, the sequence combines original music, motion design, and symbolic imagery to create a quiet, emotionally grounded opening.

Set against a dark gray, near-black background, the sequence uses simple white line art to introduce key visual elements from the film’s environment, including birthday decorations, candles, and a cake. The illustrations are intentionally minimal and precise, reflecting the film’s broader visual philosophy and narrative perspective.

The clean lines, limited palette, and restrained pacing allow the gradual emotional build of the soundtrack to carry weight beneath the imagery. Each element appears deliberately, emphasizing atmosphere and implication over spectacle while leaving interpretive space for the audience.

The result is an opening sequence grounded in subtle detail, minimalist design, and emotional restraint — mirroring The Switch itself through an approach that prioritizes tone, reflection, and intentional visual storytelling.
